A 2-year-old boy's death is under investigation after an emergency call to an Oxford home today.

According to Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens, Oxford Emergency Medical Services received a call at 7:13 a.m. to an unresponsive child at the 4000 block of Pecanwood Drive within the Oxford city limits in Talladega County.

The toddler was taken to Regional Medical Center in Anniston, where an emergency room doctor pronounced him dead at 8:10 a.m., according to Shaddix Murphy, Talladega County coroner.

Shaddix said the boy's body is being sent for an autopsy at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery, which will be performed Monday.

Owens said such an autopsy happens with any death of a child under the age of 14 in Alabama.

Owens said today that no criminal investigation was underway in connection with the death. Officials were still working this afternoon to notify some members of the child’s family about the death.
