Donoho’s girls soccer season will continue for at least one more match. Playing their first home state playoff game in the program’s history, the Lady Falcons blanked Childersburg 4-0 in the Class 1A-4A first round Saturday afternoon. It also marked the first playoff victory in the program’s history.

Even the weather cooperated with Donoho on this one. With rain showers in the forecast, the rain held off until just a few minutes after the Lady Falcons finished before the skies opened. The players even had time to munch on celebratory cupcakes.

Donoho (13-5-1) continue their journey onto new ground Tuesday when they face Jacksonville at home in the second round.

“It’s just a surreal experience,” Dohono seventh-grader Lily Wiedmer said. “I’m just glad to be part of this with our seniors, the rest of the team and our coach.”

Donoho didn’t play like a team unfamiliar with playoff wins Saturday. The Lady Falcons came out aggressive and kept the ball near the Childersburg goal for most of the first half.

Sonny Jenkins got the scoring started with 29:02 to play in the first half with a goal on a penalty kick.

Then about six minutes later, Leslie Williams scored off Mallory Landen’s crossing pass for a 2-0 lead. Katherine Westbrook added two goals in the second half, both of which came from at least 30 feet away. Jenkins contributed an assist on one of them.

Peyton Suco recorded 11 saves in goal, although the Dohono defense, led by senior Marissa Davis, rarely allowed Childersburg to test Suco too often.

“The girls have worked so hard,” said an obviously happy Peter Eschrig, Donoho’s fourth-year coach. “It seems like every time they’re reaching a new high. They won the section for the first time, set a school record with 12 (regular-season) wins, and now they’ve won a playoff game.

“I’m just elated and so proud of them.”
