The time is right for gardening, and a sale this weekend will give plant-lovers a chance to spruce up those lawns, all in support of a good cause.

The Calhoun County Tree Amigos Master Gardeners will hold a plant sale Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. until noon at the Cane Creek Community Garden at McClellan.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Tree Amigos 4-H horticulture program for residents at Coosa Valley Youth Services’ Attention Home.

The Attention Home is a non-profit 14-bed residential home for girls age 12 to 17 under jurisdiction of juvenile court.

“We’re going to have a lot of drought-tolerant plants,” said Master Gardener Sherry Blanton. “We’re going to have a lot of plants that are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. We’re going to have plants that bring color with lots of flowers.”

For something a bit different, the sale will include ever-blooming banana shrubs with flowers that smell like banana pudding. And there will be a varied selection of shrubs, perennials and trees for both sun and shade.

Blanton challenged buyers to be the first on their block with a Carolina moonlight baptista, a perennial hybrid with 18-inch tall spires with flowers that change from buttery yellow in the spring to blue-green in the summer months.

Many of the plants were grown by volunteers with the Tree Amigos program, as well as by youth at Coosa Valley Youth Services’ Attention Center, Blanton said.

“We’ll also have master gardeners there with information and advice on how to grow these plants,” Blanton said, so that buyers will know how to pick the right plant for their lawns and gardens.
