TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama opened spring football practice this afternoon, and under a sunny sky and not-to-warm temperatures, the Crimson Tide spent some time experimenting.

The defensive back drills included three surprises. Wide receivers Christion Jones and Cyrus Jones and running back Dee Hart participated. Christion Jones still wore his white jersey, which is what offensive players typically wear in practice. Hart, who is recovering from reconstructive knee surgery in the fall, wore a black non-contact jersey.

However, Alabama had Cyrus Jones decked out in the crimson jersey reserved for defensive players. In addition, he has switched from No. 8 to No. 5.

Also on defense, Xzavier Dickson has shifted from outside linebacker to defensive end.

Alabama coach Nick Saban typically works various guys at different positions in the spring, even if they might return to their original spots by August.

At quarterback, Alabama had plenty of guys rotating through. All the scholarship quarterabacks from 2012 are back, including AJ McCarron, Blake Sims, Alec Morris and Phillip Ely, who was reportedly considering transferring in the off-season.

They are joined by three freshmen -- Cooper Bateman, who is wearing No. 18; Parker McLeod, who is No. 15; and Luke Del Rio, who is wearing No. 14. Also, walk-on Edward Aldag has switched from No. 14 to No. 19.

During a couple of drills, McCarron was able to throw to someone he said he wanted to play alongside -- his brother, tight end Corey McCarron, a rising sophomore. When AJ McCarron announced he was returning for his senior season, he said he wanted to play with Corey.

During one drill, Bateman overthrew his receiver by a good bit on a deep route and hit another player in the back of the head. It turned out it was AJ McCarron.

Also in black non-contact jerseys but going through drills were receiver DeAndrew White (knee), running back Jalston Fowler (knee) and linebacker C.J. Mosley. We don't know at this point why Mosley is in a black jersey.

Wide receiver Kevin Norwood and cornerback John Fulton worked on the side as they recover from toe surgery.

Freshman tight end O.J. Howard is wearing No. 88. The 6-foot-6 Howard looks a little like a slim Tony Gonzalez, the all-pro tight end for the Atlanta Falcons.

Also among the freshmen, running back Derrick Henry is wearing No. 3, receiver Raheem Falkins has No. 80, and offensive lineman Leon Brown has No. 72.
