How much does it cost to repair a sinkhole these days? About $3.3 million, in Oxford’s case.
Good-natured humor, however, only lasts so long.
City allegiances aside, Oxford’s retail growth is good for Calhoun County. Sure, Oxford’s public schools and other services benefit when out-of-towners — Annistonians, for instance — drop Benjamins at Oxford’s stores, shops and restaurants.
But it’s impossible to say that Oxford hasn’t upgraded the shopping and dining options for Calhoun County. More options are better than no options at all.
So, yeah, count us among those who wish contractors would fill up that big, ol’ hole and let the developers of Oxford Commons get on with their business.
Come to think of it, it’s good that the sinkhole happened in prosperous Oxford. At least it can afford it.
