Madison County will play South Regional champion Escamia County on Thursday at 4:30 at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham.
Madison County had played Guntersville twice this season already, inclouding a loss in the most recent meeting before today.
“I thought we might see them again here,” Madison County coach Bubba Webster said. “It hadn’t been long ago, and I told a buddy of mine the other day that (the last meeting) might have been a good loss for us, if there is a good loss, because you don’t go in overly confident.”
The Tigers blew the game open in the second half, taking a 45-33 lead with 1:15 left in the third quarter. But the win didn’t come with dramatics.
Guntersville started a 10-0 run with just under a minute left before the fourth quarter, getting to within two with 6:46 left. That’s when Madison County blew it open again, going on a 12-0 run of its own to hold onto the win. The Tigers also had Jackson Richardson and tournament most valuable player Monterio Burchfield finish in double digits with 10 and 13 points, respectively.
“I don’t know if it’s hit me for sure yet,” Seab Webster said. “It feels pretty good to be on the big stage, but we’ve got business to take of.”
