Locals who cross Norfolk Southern Railroad’s tracks in their daily commutes might need to find alternate routes next week.

Norfolk Southern will be performing annual maintenance on its tracks in the Eastaboga and Anniston areas beginning Monday. It’s part of a five-year maintenance cycle, said Norfolk Southern track supervisor Justin Brooks.

“Every five years we replace the crossties in a section of track,” he said.

This year, Brooks said, the company will replace track from Eastaboga to Heflin.

Each crossing will be closed a minimum of two hours and could be closed as long as four hours, depending on the length and the conditions of the track in that area, Brooks said. The work will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until about 5 p.m. each day.

Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matt Wade said the closures in Anniston on Glen Addie Avenue and Fourth Street scheduled for Friday shouldn’t affect deputies getting in and out for emergencies. But it will mean people may have to detour as each of the crossings are closed.

It could also cause some problems for parents of Wellborn Elementary School parents on Wednesday when the Cooper Circle crossing is closed. The school was unaware of the closing until contacted by a reporter, but Principal Douglas O’Dell said he would contact the transportation director to make a detour plan if necessary.

Amtrak’s Crescent trains, which run through Anniston on their way between New Orleans and New York, will be disrupted for several weeks during the scheduled maintenance, according to Amtrak’s website. Starting this week through Jan. 31, there will be no service between Atlanta and New Orleans Monday through Thursday. From Tuesday, Feb. 5, through Feb. 7 there will also be no service between Atlanta and New Orleans. Service between Atlanta and New York will continue as usual. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Amtrak’s Crescent trains will provide normal service.
