The Sprint Cup Series brought its stars to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend, including Jeff Gordon, Danica Patrick, Jimmy Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.; Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr.; and Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Did we mention Dale Earnhardt Jr.?) And who ends up taking the top two spots in the Aaron's 499? Two guys named David Ragan and David Gilliland.

Trevor Bayne's day ended before any other driver's at the Aaron's 499 today, and he said he's surprised he didn't take anyone else with him. His engine blew on the 22nd lap, and he said he didn't have any warning.

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is one-upping his coach by driving the pace car at today's Aaron's 499 race, and don't think he isn't letting Nick Saban know about it.
Saban served as grand marshal at the race in 2009, but didn't get to drive.
"I joked with him that he's one of the most important guys in Alabama and he had to ride in the passenger seat," McCarron said this morning during a meeting with reporters. "What does it say about me that I'm driving?"

Denny Hamlin made his return to Sprint Cup racing today at Talladega Superspeedway even though he is suffering from a compressed fracture in his back. He remained in the car until the 22nd lap, when the race had its first first caution flag, following the blown engine of Trevor Bayne. That allowed Hamlin to go to the pit and come out of the car in favor of relief driver Brian Vickers.

Qualifying for the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway was rained out Saturday, and according to NASCAR rules, the lineup for today's race are based on Friday's practice runs.
Carl Edwards posted the fasted time at the practice session at 199.675, giving him the pole.

Michael Waltrip is scheduled to drive a car honoring Alabama's 2012 national championship season today at the Aaron's 499. It will be the No. 55 Toyota Camry. His helmet will have a Crimson Tide paint scheme, too.

Practice makes perfect, as they say, but for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499, it could make more than that.
Qualifying is set for today, beginning at 11:10 a.m., but according to the National Weather Service in Calera, the possibility of rain is 100 percent. If the wet weather washes out qualifying, the lineup for Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway will be set from Friday’s practice times.

It takes about as long to run one season of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as it does to have a child — nine months.
Drivers and their teams switch to a new location 36 times, although sometimes they hit a place twice in one season, including Talladega.
It can’t be easy for the drivers, who have to deal with us reporters at every stop.

This week, Don Schumacher is in Talladega, one of the bastions of stock car racing, as an invited guest. The International Motorsports Hall of Fame inducted him at a ceremony Thursday night. He went in with NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace and former crew chief Don Inman.
