Oxford family’s video of BCS Christmas surprise making the rounds nationally, watched by millions
The night before Daniel Buckhannan exchanged gifts with his father, he could barely sleep. “I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it,” he said. After he gave the gift — a ticket to the Bowl Championship Series title game between Alabama and Notre Dame — he’s had a little more trouble with restful nights.

Piedmont Bulldogs take care of business — winning
If coach Steve Smith entered this game with caution, he’s got good reason. He’s seen things derail — as recently as last season. The Bulldogs were in the same situation last year — undefeated, region champs and highly ranked heading into the playoffs. Piedmont was then upset in third round with a narrow 28-21 defeat on the road at Rogers.

Oxford’s Simpson selected for All-Star Classic
Size used to be a problem for Trent Simpson. Now, it’s only a problem for those who line up against him. Once not allowed to play with his own classmates in youth football because he was too big, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end has been selected for the state’s biggest all-star game, the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic on Dec. 15.

Prep Picks: No time for overtime this week
Overtime, by any name, is perhaps the best part of sports. The boys of summer call it free baseball. In NASCAR, there’s no better reason to tune in than a green-white-checkered, wreck-filled finish. It’s simply overtime in football.

TALLADEGA --- Denny Hamlin’s approach to Talladega Superspeedway was not sexy. And he was apologetic. Hamlin hung out in the back of the field and avoided Sunday’s last-lap crash to come home with a clean car and a 14th place finish. With the finish, Hamlin preserves his hopes as a contender in the Chase for the Sprint Cup sitting third, 23 points behind leader Brad Keselowski.

The key to winning at Talladega Superspeedway over the years has been having a good car. But Matt Kenseth won Sunday’s Good Sam Roadside Assistance, albeit indirectly, because he had a bad one.

There was nothing generic about the rides that raced around the 2.66-mile tri-oval at Talladega Superspeedway on Wednesday. In a test for the 2013 models, there were different humps and curves to the sheet metal of the Fords, Chevrolets and Toyotas.
