WHITE PLAINS – In White Plains these days, it’s all about small victories. Small moral victories. The Wildcats certainly got one last Friday night and with that could provide some hope for the second half of the season.
Spring Garden, with only one loss this season, defeated White Plains 42-28 in a non-region matchup, but despite the loss the game represented the first time in three games the Wildcats had cracked the scoreboard.
The bigger plus was in the first half, the Wildcats (1-4) were very much in the game.
On the opening possession, White Plains went ahead.
Former backup quarterback Konnor Amis, a sophomore, was the key to the Wildcats’ first-half success.
He scored two touchdowns that helped White Plains lead the game 14-7 at one point.
Amis’ first touchdown came on a 48-yard quarterback keeper, which was the first touchdown of the game.
He scored again on a 10-yard run, which put White Plains up 14-7.
The Panthers responded to each of Amis’ touchdowns and one-upped him heading into the half with a 21-14 lead.
In the second half, Amis couldn’t provide the same magic he found in the first to keep pace with a determined Spring Garden squad.
The Panthers gashed the White Plains defense for 343 rushing yards lead by Trey Littlefield, who had 19 carries for 217 yards and four touchdowns.
Spring Garden held White Plains scoreless until the fourth quarter when the lead was solidly in hand.
Up 42-14, White Plains got its final two touchdowns against the Panthers’ reserves.
Things will not get any easier for White Plains this week. The Wildcats, searching to score their first touchdown in region play, will host Piedmont.
