Hewitt-Trussville had other ideas.
Huskies quarterback Brett Miller passed for 123 yards in the final 14 minutes, including 35 yards to Noah Wilson with 18 seconds left in the game, as the Huskies stunned Class 6A's No. 4-ranked Yellow Jackets at Jack Wood Stadium.
The victory gives Hewitt-Trussville (4-2, 4-0) a leg up in the Region 7 race.
Oxford (5-1, 3-1) outgained the Huskies by 91 yards, but made many uncharacteristic mistakes, such as five fumbles for the night, two of which were turnovers.
"We don't turn the ball over much, but we did tonight — too many times," Oxford coach John Grass said. "We struggled in the first half, but played better in the second. It just wasn't good enough."
The game was full of big plays by both teams. Oxford converted a third-and-18 in the third quarter on a scoring drive capped by Thomas Anderson's 6-yard run for a 12-7 lead — Oxford's first of the game. It also converted a third-and-22 on its next possession when Judd Edwards threw a long pass snatched out of the air by Tevin Fletcher that turned into a 59-yard gain. Anderson finished off that drive with a 4-yard run for an 18-13 lead with 6:32 to play.
After the Yellow Jackets forced a turnover on downs by the Huskies at the Oxford 17 with 2:12 to play, it looked like they would survive with the win.
But Oxford went three-and-out on its next possession and followed that up with a 20-yard punt, giving the Huskies the ball at the Yellow Jackets' 35 with 27 seconds to play.
Trussville went for the big play on first down, with Wilson stepping in front of a defender to catch the ball at the 5. He then carried Oxford defenders Dave Hill and Kyle O'Dell on his back the final 5 yards for the score.
"I just knew I had to score," said Wilson.
"We didn't have any timeouts, so we knew we had to throw the ball down there," Trussville coach Hal Riddle said. "Noah caught it and just kept his legs going.
"Man, that was a sight to see that referee raise his hands in the air."
Wilson, a junior running back, finished with 146 yards receiving on eight receptions. He had 122 yards receiving in the second half. Mann finished with 53 yards rushing and a score and Liston Corcoran had a 15-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter for the first score of the night for either team.
Edwards rushed for 64 yards for Oxford, and Chandler Shakespeare added 58 more on 14 carries, playing with a cast that covered his right hand, wrist and forearm. Anderson had 52 yards and the two scores.
Tylan Martin caught seven passes for 36 yards and Antonio Webb added five receptions for 48 yards. James Newman kicked field goals of 23 yards in the second quarter and 30 yards early in the third quarter to pull the Yellow Jackets to within 7-6.
"Tough loss," Grass said. "Our guys played better in the second half, they just made one more big play than we did."
