The Star's prep football players of the week
Each week, The Star's Sports department will select the best efforts from around the area on both offense and defense. Pleasant Valley's Michael Lockridge and Munford's Montrel Parker are Week 5's award winners.
Offensive
Name: Michael Lockridge
School: Pleasant Valley
Class: Junior
Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 180-pounds
Position: Quarterback
Highlights: Lockridge looked like a natural as he picked apart Jacksonville's secondary, completing eight of his 11 pass attempts to the tune of 241 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. Senior wide receiver Ben Haynes, who finished with four catches for 136 yards and three scores, was his main target.
What they're saying: "Michael probably played as well as I've ever seen him play. I've been waiting on him to have it (a big game). He took it all in stride. He's maturing. This was only his fourth ball game being the starter and he's growing up. We knew there'd be some aches and pains, but he's getting a little better each and every week." — Pleasant Valley coach Jeff Davis
Defensive
Name: Montrel Parker
School: Munford
Class: Senior
Height, weight: 5-foot-6, 155-pounds
Position: Outside linebacker
Highlights: Parker had only started two games at linebacker going into the Lions' upset of No. 2 T.C. Central. But that didn't stop the former cornerback and undersized dynamo from racking up a team-high 16 tackles, including nine solos, against the Fighting Tigers' potent offense. He also added 121 yards and two touchdowns on offense during the 25-7 win.
What they're saying: "He's pretty consistent and he performs well for us. He's pretty valuable on offense, so we didn't want him to have to go both ways. But because of injuries we had to put him at linebacker and he's been all over the field." — Munford coach Todd Smith
