Nick Birdsong: Signed, sealed, delivered

05-13-2008

I can remember when I first went off to college. It was the beginning of a new life academically and the end of the end of my organized athletic endeavors. Those who can, do, and those who can't study — or in my case, write. Here's to those who can and do both. I present to you the notes.

• ANNISTON STARS OFF TO CONCORDIA-SELMA: Concordia College in Selma will welcome six Anniston Bulldogs into its burgeoning athletic program next season. Four football players and a pair of girls basketball players all will sign on to become Hornets come fall at a ceremony to be held at the school on Wednesday.

Michael Heath, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound outside linebacker; Tommy Hausey, a 5-7, 165-pound athlete who played quarterback and defensive back; 5-8, 160-pound wide receiver/defensive back Lakegan Ashford and 5-9, 175-pound running back/defensive back Jeremy Morris all will pledge allegiance to Hornets coach Shepherd Skanes.

This latest group will give the Bulldogs a county-best seven signees from its 2007 squad. Offensive linemen Antoine McClain and Quint Roberts signed with Clemson and Grambling State, respectively, on National Signing Day in February. Wide receiver Teddric Christian signed with Division II Lane College (Tenn.)

Tyeshia Dennard, a first-team All-Calhoun County selection, also will be attending Concordia, as will teammate Latisha Perry.

• WHITE PLAINS' KLINE TO PLAY AT BSC: In just one season at White Plains, forward Mikey Kline managed to make a name for himself among college basketball recruiters. The 6-7, 205-pound senior transferred from Sacred Heart after his junior year and averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game as the Wildcats went 26-6 and reached the state Final Four for the first time since 1995. He'll be playing his college ball at Division III Birmingham Southern College next season. Kline was a first-team selection to The Star's Class 1A-3A All-Calhoun County squad. He also considered Maryville College (Tenn.), LaGrange College (Ga.) and Shorter College (Ga.).

• MEET THE COACH: Now that it's officially official and former Andalusia football coach Heath Harmon is at the helm in White Plains, it's time for the Munford and Jacksonville State grad to get reacquainted with the area. To that end, a meet-and-greet is scheduled from 5-6 p.m. today in the White Plains High School cafeteria. After putting up an 11-2 season, reaching the third round of the Class 4A playoffs and helping to establish linebacker Nico Johnson as the one of the nation's top recruits, I'm sure he'll be warmly welcomed into the community.

• A CHANGE IN PLANS: The jamboree game between Deshler-Homewood that will be played at Oxford's Lamar Field as part of Inside Alabama's Spring Jam Kickoff will be played at 1 p.m. on May 17th. The game was slotted to start an hour later.
