2 UGA linemen arrested ATHENS, Ga. — Two University of Georgia football players have been arrested and jailed on charges of simple battery. The Athens-Clarke County Jail report shows offensive linemen Justin Anderson and Trinton Sturdivant were both released within hours of their arrest on Monday night on $1,500 bonds. Sturdivant, 19, is a starting tackle from Wadesboro, N.C. Anderson, 20, is a guard from Ocilla, Ga. The incident allegedly occurred early Friday morning at the East Campus Village dormitory on the university's campus. The woman who made the complaint said she and a friend were returning to the dorm about 1:30 a.m. when they encountered Anderson, Sturdivant and another unidentified male. She said they touched her without permission and began following her. Ex-ASU coach hoping for best Former Alabama State University coach L.C. Cole says he hopes to have alleged NCAA rules violations against him dropped or reduced to minor charges. "I'm happy that it's coming to an end, but I'm anxious over how it's going to play out," said Cole, who was fired by ASU in 2003 and now coaches in the Canadian Football League. Cole will have a preliminary hearing to make his case. If he and his attorney, Jeremy Walker of Montgomery, can get the charges thrown out or reduced to minor violations, Cole could avoid having to go to Colorado in August to try again before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions. The Montgomery Advertiser reported Monday that Cole might benefit financially if the charges are reduced to minor status. When fired, Cole had two years left on a contract that paid him about $125,000 annually and stipulated it could be terminated only if he was found to commit major NCAA violations, the newspaper said. "I think we can prove without a doubt that L.C. Cole acted within NCAA guidelines throughout his career, despite working under very trying conditions," Walker said. Pats cut Andrews The New England Patriots released defensive back Willie Andrews on Tuesday, one day after he was arrested for allegedly pointing a handgun at his girlfriend's head. The 24-year-old Andrews, primarily a special teams player, was being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Thursday following his second arrest this year. The other arrest on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and driving an unregistered motor vehicle occurred in February. Andrews admitted in court in May that there was enough evidence to convict him at trial but did not plead guilty. |
