Police: Johns sold cocaine on campus

TUSCALOOSA — One of Jimmy Johns' five alleged cocaine deals occurred in the parking lot of the University of Alabama football complex, the Mobile Press-Register reported Wednesday. Citing a deposition filed Wednesday in Tuscaloosa District Court, the paper said the former Alabama football player sold one gram of cocaine to an undercover narcotics agent on June 17. "The transaction took place at the University of Alabama football complex parking lot," said the deposition form completed by Johns' arresting officer. Police claim to have audio or video recordings of each of Johns' five cocaine deals. The alleged deals occurred in the middle of last week, ending on June 19. Two allegedly occurred on the Alabama campus. Johns was arrested near his east Tuscaloosa residence, Tuscaloosa police Capt. Jeff Snyder said Tuesday. Johns was charged with five felony counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. He also faces a felony possession charge, after police said they found cocaine and ecstasy pills at his residence. Johns was released on $120,000 bond from the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Wednesday. He also had to pay two outstanding traffic tickets. Johns next faces a preliminary hearing in district court. The case would next move to a grand jury and then to circuit court. Johns played quarterback and running back before moving to linebacker this spring. Alabama coach Nick Saban dismissed him from the team Tuesday. Lee Thomas, a Johns family friend and Tuscaloosa resident, told the Press-Register that Johns got mixed up with the wrong crowd. "He made a mistake, like all young people do," Thomas said. "He's young. Everybody makes mistakes. I've made mistakes and I've come back to lead a nice life. "He's a young boy and he's going to come back. Knowing Jimmy like I know him, he knows he made a mistake. When you pick the wrong crowd to be around, that happens. Everybody goes through that." |
