It’s the ultimate case of “if you broke it, someone else bought it.” According to published reports, Alabama auctioned off the 2011 national championship trophy broken by a player’s father. And got a reported $105,000 for it Sunday. Which is about three times it’s worth, if it never had been broken.

Tide basketball: Antoine Pettway promoted to assistant coach
Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant has reorganized his staff, including promoting former Tide player Antoine Pettway to assistant coach. Dan Hipsher, the Tide's associate head coach under Grant during 2009-13, was hired as Texas-Pan American's head coach in April. That led to the shuffle of responsibilities announced Monday. Grant said John Brannen has been promoted to associated head coach. Brannen has served as an assistant coach the past four years.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops questioned recently whether the Southeastern Conference really is the best football conference, basing much of his argument on the ability of the weakest teams. Stoops says his own Big 12 Conference has better teams at the bottom. While Alabama coach Nick Saban told AL.com on Thursday night he has better things to do than worry about what Stoops is saying, I apparently don't. Especially when sitting through rain delays at high school softball regional tournaments.

AJ: Saban had simple advice for driving pace car
Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is one-upping his coach by driving the pace car at today's Aaron's 499 race, and don't think he isn't letting Nick Saban know about it. Saban served as grand marshal at the race in 2009, but didn't get to drive. "I joked with him that he's one of the most important guys in Alabama and he had to ride in the passenger seat," McCarron said this morning during a meeting with reporters. "What does it say about me that I'm driving?"

Alabama lands sixth football commitment for 2014
Alabama has received a commitment today from Zach Whitley, a linebacker from Texas. Whitley is a 6-foot-2, 220-pounder from Galena Park, Texas, which is a suberb of Houston. Scout.com ranks Whitley as the fourth best middle linebacker nationally, while 247sports has him as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the country. Whitley is a consensus four-star prospect on the five-star scale.

Field performance rather than Pro Day may make difference for Tide's Jesse Williams
Jesse Williams started for two years for two national championship teams, but the NFL draft buzz surrounding him concerns a blip of fewer than five seconds March 13. That's when Alabama hosted a Pro Day for NFL scouts to work out Crimson Tide stars eligible for the draft. Williams was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.9 seconds, which seems awfully swift for a 325-pound defensive tackle. In addition, he bench pressed 225 pounds 30 times in repetition.

Tide hoops star announces he plans to transfer
TUSCALOOSA – Alabama guard Trevor Lacey announced he will transfer to another school today. Lacey, who played two seasons at Alabama, made the announcement through the school in a news release, although he didn't say where he plans to go. Crimson Tide basketball coach Anthony Grant has granted Lacey his release. If Lacey transfers to another Division I school, he will have to sit out a year but will have two years of eligibility remaining.
