It’s the ultimate case of “if you broke it, someone else bought it.”
According to published reports, Alabama auctioned off the 2011 national championship trophy broken by a player’s father. And got a reported $105,000 for it Sunday. Which is about three times it’s worth, if it never had been broken.
Tide basketball: Antoine Pettway promoted to assistant coach Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant has reorganized his staff, including promoting former Tide player Antoine Pettway to assistant coach.
Dan Hipsher, the Tide's associate head coach under Grant during 2009-13, was hired as Texas-Pan American's head coach in April. That led to the shuffle of responsibilities announced Monday.
Grant said John Brannen has been promoted to associated head coach. Brannen has served as an assistant coach the past four years.
Bill Battle: Q & A with Alabama's athletics director Alabama athletics director Bill Battle spoke with reporters Wednesday afternoon at Turner Field before coach Nick Saban’s latest Crimson Caravan stop. Among other things, Battle discussed the possibilities the Southeastern Conference television network will bring, along with the Crimson Tide's new women’s basketball coach, Kristy Curry.
Saban: McClain wants to get things straightened out, then decide about football Alabama coach Nick Saban he spoke with Rolando McClain before the former Crimson Tide linebacker announcing he is retiring from the NFL at 23. Still, Saban was supportive of McClain’s decision to step away from the game. He said the two have spoken several times in the past month.
Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: New Tide coach has lot in common with JSU's McGinnis Thursday was spent in Tuscaloosa, where Alabama introduced a new women's basketball coach, Kristy Curry. About two hours later, there was another news conference, but this one was for Jacksonville State softball coach Jana McGinnis, as her team prepares to play in the Tuscaloosa Regional. If you didn't know otherwise, you'd swear they're the same person.
Focus for new Tide women's hoops coach: attendance, recruiting Alabama has a new women's basketball coach, Kristy Curry, and it's clear her job won't be limited to improving the win totals.
That needs work for the Crimson Tide, which won 14 Southeastern Conference games in five years under former head coach Wendell Hudson. But Alabama athletics director Bill Battle is hoping Curry can create an atmosphere that improves attendance as well.
Rolando McClain, 23, announces retirement from football Former Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain has told the Baltimore Ravens that he's retiring from the NFL.
The 23-year-old McClain played three seasons with the Oakland Raiders before signing a one-year contract with Baltimore as a free agent April 12.
Basketball: Opponents set for Tide, Tigers in SEC/Big 12 Challenge Alabama will host Texas Tech, and Auburn will visit Iowa State in the Southeastern Conference/Big 12 basketball challenge next season.
The Crimson Tide will play in the inaugural game when it hosts Texas Tech at Coleman Coliseum on Nov. 14. Auburn will play at Iowa State on Dec. 2.
Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Stoops takes on SEC, but numbers say he's wrong Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops questioned recently whether the Southeastern Conference really is the best football conference, basing much of his argument on the ability of the weakest teams.
Stoops says his own Big 12 Conference has better teams at the bottom. While Alabama coach Nick Saban told AL.com on Thursday night he has better things to do than worry about what Stoops is saying, I apparently don't. Especially when sitting through rain delays at high school softball regional tournaments.
AJ: Saban had simple advice for driving pace car Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is one-upping his coach by driving the pace car at today's Aaron's 499 race, and don't think he isn't letting Nick Saban know about it.
Saban served as grand marshal at the race in 2009, but didn't get to drive.
"I joked with him that he's one of the most important guys in Alabama and he had to ride in the passenger seat," McCarron said this morning during a meeting with reporters. "What does it say about me that I'm driving?"
TV partnership: It's not new, but none of the others had the SEC as a partner The SEC's network agreement with ESPN is not an innovative endeavor. Other conferences have realized moderate success (Pac-12) or abrupt shutdown (Mountain West), but the clearest example of a blockbuster is the Big Ten Network, off the ground in August 2007 and now in 52 million homes, including more than 50 percent outside the Big Ten’s nine-state region.
Edwards' In My Opinion: Franchione knew when to walk away Dennis Franchione’s name popped up in the news this week as he agreed to a
five-year contract extension at Texas State. That’s an awfully big fall for someone who once coached Alabama.
Alabama lands sixth football commitment for 2014 Alabama has received a commitment today from Zach Whitley, a linebacker from Texas.
Whitley is a 6-foot-2, 220-pounder from Galena Park, Texas, which is a suberb of Houston.
Scout.com ranks Whitley as the fourth best middle linebacker nationally, while 247sports has him as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the country. Whitley is a consensus four-star prospect on the five-star scale.
Saban: McCarron needs to let someone else drive Talladega pace car labama quarterback AJ McCarron will serve as honorary pace car driver for the Aaron’s 499, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday.
His coach, Nick Saban, won’t say if he’s a nervous about McCarron driving at the Talladega Superspeedway.
Saban served as the Aaron’s 499 grand marshall in 2009.
McCarron to drive pace car for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron will serve as honorary pace car driver for the Aaron’s 499, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday.
Mark Edwards: College playoff won't solve all the arguing Going from two teams to four hardly will make all the issues go away. It’s kind of like divorce —we still will have problems to discuss and argue over, but they’re just new problems.
Field performance rather than Pro Day may make difference for Tide's Jesse Williams Jesse Williams started for two years for two national championship teams, but the NFL draft buzz surrounding him concerns a blip of fewer than five seconds March 13.
That's when Alabama hosted a Pro Day for NFL scouts to work out Crimson Tide stars eligible for the draft. Williams was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.9 seconds, which seems awfully swift for a 325-pound defensive tackle. In addition, he bench pressed 225 pounds 30 times in repetition.
Tide hoops star announces he plans to transfer TUSCALOOSA – Alabama guard Trevor Lacey announced he will transfer to another school today.
Lacey, who played two seasons at Alabama, made the announcement through the school in a news release, although he didn't say where he plans to go. Crimson Tide basketball coach Anthony Grant has granted Lacey his release. If Lacey transfers to another Division I school, he will have to sit out a year but will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Alabama looking for new women's hoops coach Alabama has begun a search for a women's basketball coach, according to a release by the school today.
Alabama athletics director Bill Battle announced Tide women's basketball coach Wendell Hudson has been reassigned to an administrative position within the athletics department.
