Mr. Lowell White of Heflin was the recipient of a United Daughters of the Confederacy World War II Cross of Military Service on January 20, 2013. The award was presented by the Major General Patrick R. Cleburne UDC Chapter 2632. Chapter Recorder of Military Service Jo Howard and Chapter President Lynda Lowery conducted the bestowal ceremony at Mr. White's home. Present were his wife Mrs. Annie Laure White, son Charles Ed White and daughter-in-law Camille White. During World War II, Mr. White served in the United States Navy as a Gunner's Mate aboard the USS Dakota. His great grandfather, James W. White, served as a Private in Company I 56th Regiment Georgia Infantry during the War Between the States.Ê

On February 14, this UDC Chapter gave gifts to the veterans at the new Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home in Pell City. Earlier the residents were asked for suggestions about what kind of gifts they would like to receive.ÊThe UDC's gifts met the Veterans requests with a variety of games such as checkers, dominoes, playing cards, monopoly, as well as ice cream freezers. Chapter member Jo Howard delivered the gifts as a part of a Valentine's Day social event planned for the veterans by the Retirement Home's staff.
