Got ants? Tired of ladybug invasions in the fall? Brought home bed bugs from your last trip?

Alabama Cooperative Extension professionals will answer these questions and more in a free webinar series beginining next month. Alabama Extension entomologist Dr. Kathy Flanders says the “Don’t Bug Me” series, which focuses on fire ants and other insects that affect the home and landscape, is designed for homeowners and the general public.

“The webinars are specifically for ordinary people who need answers they can use,” Flanders said.

Dani Carroll, a regional home grounds agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, will host the inaugural webinar, “Fire Ant Home Remedies — What Works, What Doesn’t,” at 1 p.m. Friday.

“Do a web search, and you will find lots of sites with home remedies for fire ant control,” said Carroll. “They are all over the Internet. This webinar will help ordinary people learn what works and what doesn’t.”

The first webinar will also feature Wizzie Brown, a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension specialist working in integrated pest management who will debunk some myths about dealing with fire ants. Brown says she will begin by explaining some of the less toxic, but still effective, methods for managing fire ants.

Carroll — known to regular readers of The Star for her column On Gardening, which often appears on this page — explains that the “Don’t Bug Me” series offers credible expertise and field-tested data.

“This first webinar, and the rest of the series, will give people sound, research-based solutions for pests from some of the top experts in the nation,” Carroll said.

The “Don’t Bug Me” series is sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension and eXtension, the online educational network of the Cooperative Extension System. Live webinars will air the first Friday of each month at 1 p.m. and will last 30 to 45 minutes. Flanders tells those who cannot tune in for the live webinar not to worry.

“The webinars will be recorded and archived,” she said. “If you miss one, you will be able to watch a recording later.”

Other scheduled webinars include “Ants, Ants, Ants” in March, “You Have Fire Ants Where?” in April, “Protect Your Loved Ones from Fire Ants” in May and “Get Rid of those Bed Bugs” in June. As upcoming webinars approach, check http://www.extension.org/pages/66408 for more information.
