An early morning house fire in Fruithurst on Thursday led to the deaths of two people inside, though the Cleburne County coroner would not give their ages.

Coroner Ben McKnight declined to provide nearly any specifics about the fire on Thursday.

Fruithurst firefighters said they were notified of the fire at about 7:30 a.m. and arrived a few minutes later to find the home in the 17000 block of U.S. 78 engulfed in flames.

Fruithurst Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Chad Roberts said two adults had escaped the house with one child, but had not been able to get another child out. He said he could not release the names of those who had been in the house.

Firefighters said the flames were too intense to enter the home.

“The way we’re taught, life and safety is first,” Roberts said. “Our first priority is to go after the people.”

“I don’t know how many times we tried to get back in the house,” said Randy Ginn, another Fruithurst firefighter. “They had two vehicles parked in the yard and just from the radiant heat, they caught on fire.”

The call to 911 came from men passing the house on their way to work, Roberts said. When firefighters arrived, the roof had collapsed on about half the house, he said. Roberts said he was unsure whether the home had a fire alarm.

Besides Fruithurst, fire departments from the Muscadine, Piney Woods, Cane Creek and Abernathy communities responded to the scene and worked for about seven and a half hours, Roberts said.

Roberts said ambulances took the two adults and a child to Higgins General Hospital in Bremen, Ga.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s office, Roberts said.
