OXFORD -- Oxford High tailback Racean Thomas was a man a of few words when he took the podium after receiving his Under Armour All-American jersey Friday afternoon.

Wearing the No. 14 white jersey at his high school gymnasium, Thomas thanked God and Under Armour before taking a seat next to his mother and sister. He will wear the jersey in the Unver Armour All-American game, which will be Jan. 2 at 3 p.m. in Tropicana Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

“It’s an honor because there’s only a select few so it feels great,” Thomas said. “Playing against top competition will help me prepare for the next level because all those guys will be on college teams.

“I don’t think I’ve thought about playing in this game. I just like playing football and have a love for the game.”

Thomas, a five-star recruit and Auburn commitment, is having a standout season for Oxford, rushing for 1,928 yards and 28 touchdowns on 183 carries entering tonight’s game against Tuscaloosa County in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

“I’m having a great season because my O line has been blocking for me,” he said. “My receivers also open up my running game because when we throw the ball it creates balance in our game.”

Talk of Thomas being a favorite for Mr. Football has risen in the past few weeks. The tailback finished second last season for Class 6A Back of the Year behind Mr. Football Jeremy Johnson, who is now at Auburn.

“I don’t think about it too much,” Thomas said.
