CENTRE — Anniston senior running back DeMarcus Thomas rushed for 171 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown to lead the Bulldogs to a 21-7 victory over Cherokee County on Friday in Class 4A, Region 5 action.

Anniston was also aided by two Warrior fumbles and an interception.

“The defense played solid,” Anniston coach Eddie Bullock said. “I was proud of the defense.”

However, it was the Warriors (2-5, 1-4 Class 4A, Region 5) who put the pressure on the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-3) early.

Cherokee County scored first on a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running back Tanner Johnson in the first quarter. Eric Burgess booted the extra point to give Cherokee County at 7-0 lead.

Anniston responded to take the lead at 14-7 with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, both of which were directed by junior quarterback Quint Dobbins.

Dobbins scored the Bulldogs’ first touchdown on a 1-yard run, then tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Qua Frazier before halftime.

Dobbins finished the game completing 5 of 13 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 18 yards on three carries with a score.

Anniston scored the game’s final touchdown on a 30-yard run in the third quarter by Thomas.

“We had about six or seven penalties in the first half, jumping offside and holding,” Bullock said. “We came out in the second half and the defense played consistent. We were able to move the chains.”

Senior running Dallas Cabe led the Warriors with 67 yards on 12 carries. Junior quarterback J.T. Hill had 44 yards on 13 carries. He also completed 6 of 12 passes for 59 yards and an interception. Senior running back Ty Green was limited to 34 yards on nine carries.

Cherokee County plays Thursday at Jacksonville State against Munford in another Region 5 clash. Anniston hosts Hokes Bluff on Friday.
