As the sounds of the Lt. Dan Band floated up to me Sunday evening, I had bittersweet thoughts of mothers everywhere receiving telegrams or visits. I imagined holding the yellowed Western Union that my mother, eight months pregnant with me, got in 1950 announcing the death of her husband in Korea, less than two months after he had said goodbye.

Losing my father changed my life forever, as losing limbs or loved ones inevitably does. I was in college during the Vietnam War and a song was popular back then that I doubt Lt. Dan played Sunday night, but it bears repeating because it still applies today. The refrain goes like this: “When will they ever learn … when will they ever learn.”

It’s up to us now. We can learn.
