For those of us who love history and politics, it is a sad experience to sit by the bedside of a dying major political party.

As long as Republicans prefer ideological purity to governing, they will never govern again, at least not at the presidential level. Some of the party’s leaders know this.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham recently said, to paraphrase, that we just don’t have enough angry white guys to be viable over the long haul. Politics is the art of compromise. However, the Tea Party and its ilk think that politics is the ability to obstruct.

By at least 2020, the Republican Party will be dead if it cannot shed its wingnuts and pitch a bigger tent. If it dies, it will be by its own hand. I call it politicide.

Think about famous Republicans of the past. Now, think about the party’s current leaders. It’s like comparing orchids to wild onions, isn’t it?
