On Jan. 7, 2000, The Star published a story that said Anniston would have a major town meeting to focus on housing and education.

“Billed as ‘A Celebration of Community,’ the forum will introduce two goals: to eliminate Anniston’s substandard housing by 2015, and, by yet-unspecified date, have all students in the Anniston City Schools reading at grade level.”

On Jan. 13, 2000. The Star wrote that Next Start chairman H. Brandt Ayers stated that Anniston City Schools students will be able to read at grade level within 10 years.

Once again, Anniston civic leaders have failed their community. Substandard housing is still rampant, and Anniston City Schools students still cannot read at grade level.

Is it any wonder why the city of Oxford is booming while the city of Anniston is dying?
