We have witnessed a dismal performance by our elected state and U.S. legislative officials. Their focus has been on fighting the federal government while losing sight of the people’s needs in Alabama. Their actions and attitudes have demonstrated that nothing is more important to them than fighting the federal government while promoting their own personal special interests.

A recent vivid example of the Alabama Legislature’s lack of concern with the needs of our state is the expense related to litigation for House Bill 56, the immigration law. Responsible stewards of Alabama tax revenues would have delayed legal proceedings until the judicial outcome of the Arizona lawsuits was determined and saved taxpayers a lot of money. The state is required to pay attorney fees and expenses of $350,000 for groups that sued to block the law.

We are seen around this nation and the world as a hateful and unwelcoming state. If you don’t care what people think of us, do you care that it hits us in the pocketbook?

We have significant needs in the areas of poverty, education and economic development across Alabama, not to mention the need for affordable health care for all of our citizens.
