Schools systems delaying the start of classes include Calhoun County, Anniston, Oxford and Piedmont. Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School will also start class two hours later.
“We don’t want to put any children in harm’s way,” said Mike Fincher, director of safety and security for Calhoun County Schools.
Most of north and northeastern Alabama currently sits under a freezing rain advisory. According to the National Weather Service in Calera, forecasters expect freezing rain in northeast Alabama between 4 and 10 a.m. Friday. Temperatures could remain below freezing in the area until noon.
Meteorologists with the Weather Service expect between 0.01 inches and 0.1 inches of ice accumulation for the Calhoun County area.
