Prep roundup: Oxford closes out regular season with a win

OXFORD — Oxford High’s softball team closed out its regular season with an 8-5 win over Shelby County on Monday.

Winning pitcher Sydney Williams worked all seven innings and struck out seven.

At the plate, Jenn Turner was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Makenzie Thrantham was 2-for-3.

Stewart Gail Chase was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Oxford (26-16) will host the Class 6A, Area 13 tournament, beginning Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Track and field

Class 4A, Section 3 — Anniston finished second in the girls portion of the meet, following champion Lincoln. Cleburne County was fourth.

In the boys division, Anniston was fifth and Cleburne County was eighth. St. Clair County won the title. The top five individual performances in each event advance to the state meet.

For Anniston’s girls, Ki-yana Bullock won the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.

Jasmine Heard won the long jump, while teammate Tedeidra Long was third and Carsheuna Curry was fifth.

Curry won the triple jump and was third in the high jump.

Davia Palmer won the 100 meters and was fourth in the 200. Carlina Welch was fifth in the 100. Jasmine Heard was third in the 400.

For Cleburne County, Ansley Walker was second in the javelin and fourth in the 1,600 meters. Kristian Brown was fourth in the 100 meters and third in the 200. Jennifer Moore was second in the 800 meters and the 1,600. Crimson Jeffers was fourth in the 3,200 meters.

In the relays, Anniston’s girls team of Palmer, Long, Carlina Welch and Heard won the 4-by-100. Cleburne County’s squad of Alexis Brown, Kyaira Heard, Alyayna Pernell and Kristian Brown placed third. Anniston’s Long, Palmer, Welch and Heard were third in the 4-by-400. The Cleburne County group of Moore, Heard, Alexis Brown and Kristian Brown were second.

Cleburne’s Julie Clark, Madison Noell, Erykah Ware and Walker were second in the 4-by-800.

For the Anniston boys, Jwon Banks, Ki-jana Byrd, Lemuel Heard and Elvin Riddle were second in the 4-by-400, and Jarvis Jackson, Edwards Montgomery, Byrd and Zebadee Lunsford were third in the 4-by-800.

Lunsford was fourth in the 3,200 meters and fifth in the 1,600 meters. Tadarius Smith was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Heard was fifth in the 100 and 200 meters. For Cleburne County, Drew Rutledge won the javelin. Christian Henson was fourth in the 400 meters.
