Anniston police say a man arrested on felony theft charges stole a car and wrecked it earlier this month.

James Henry Lunceford, 31, of Anniston, told police he needed to use the car to go shopping, Anniston police Capt. Allen George said.

“He said he had to run errands because his vehicle was out of gas,” George said.

According to the captain, the vehicle, a 2008 Chevy HHR, was recovered from Skinner’s Body Shop in Oxford Wednesday, where it had been towed after a hit-and-run.

“Lunceford wrecked it and left it on the side of the road,” George said.

George said Lunceford took the vehicle from the victim’s residence when she was at work. The victim told police the car belongs to her father who works out of town, the captain said.

The report did not say how Lunceford knew the victim, but he had access to her home, George said.

The victim told police that her car went missing sometime between Aug. 16 and Aug. 19 but she did not report it to the police until Aug. 19, the captain said.

George said Lunceford turned himself in Monday and was in the Anniston City Jail on Tuesday. His bond is set at $10,000 and his court date is scheduled for Sept. 30.
