A pedestrian struck by a car Wednesday on U.S. 431 died last night in a Birmingham hospital, the coroner said.

Jackie Sigafuss, 29, of Alexandria died from multiple internal injuries and head trauma Thursday around 6 p.m. at UAB Hospital, according to Pat Brown, Calhoun County coroner.

Sigafuss was hit by a 1999 Isuzu at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Alabama State Troopers said. Troopers reported the man driving the car, Carl Vest, of Gadsden was not injured in the accident.

Lt. Jon Garlick, with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, said Sigafuss was walking alongside the road near Supreme Beverage in Alexandria when he was struck. The Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident and coordinated with local emergency medical service crews, Garlick said.

Brown said he believes the man’s death was an accident.

Garlick said Wednesday afternoon that severe weather had significantly reduced visibility on area roadways during the time of the incident.

A spokesman for the Alabama State Troopers said Friday morning that the agency is still investigating the incident.
