Anniston police on Thursday arrested a mother on charges that she left her 2-year-old son alone in a car while shopping last month.

Dayna Sherri Dunn Zavala, 33, of Ohatchee, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, after she left her son alone in a car while she went shopping on March 16, Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said.

Sparks said officers were called to a parking lot on the 1700 block of Quintard Avenue and found the boy by himself. The child was discovered in a 2013 Honda Accord between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, a police report stated.

Zavala told police her son was asleep and she didn’t want to wake him, Sparks said.

The Department of Human Resources investigated the incident and enough evidence was gathered to charge the mother, the sergeant said.

Zavala was released from the Anniston City Jail Thursday on a $500 bond. A court date is scheduled for April 17.
