1894 One of the earliest motion picture experiments took place at the Thomas Edison studio in West Orange, N.J., as Fred Ott was filmed taking a pinch of snuff and sneezing.

1927 Commercial transatlantic telephone service was inaugurated between New York and London.

1949 George C. Marshall resigned as U.S. Secretary of State; President Harry S. Truman chose Dean Acheson to succeed him.

1953 President Harry S. Truman announced in his State of the Union message to Congress that the United States had developed a hydrogen bomb.

1963 The U.S. Post Office raised the cost of a first-class stamp from 4 to 5 cents.

1989, Emperor Hirohito of Japan died in Tokyo at age 87; he was succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Akihito.

Jan. 7, 1938, in The Star: Ernest G. Wilson, Oxford service station operator, will take over the duties of police chief in Oxford tomorrow, succeeding M. L. Gaines. Mr. Wilson was approved at a meeting of the City Council last night; Mabry E. McDowell was elected night policeman in the same session. Also this date: Stop signs along intersections of boulevards in Anniston have been repainted. The new signs have been painted an aluminum color and bear the word “stop” in black letters. In other signage developments, new highway direction signs have been erected by the State Highway Department at the intersection of Tenth Street and Noble Street, where all highways passing through Anniston converge.

Jan. 7, 1988, in The Star: The Cherokee County city of Centre received 4 to 5 inches of snow early this morning, but amounts lessened as one moved farther south. The winter system did not create exceptionally dangerous driving conditions for early-morning commuters in Anniston, but there was reason for caution on bridges and side streets as slush built up and re-froze.

Antiques Roadshow, 7 p.m. on PBS: The season premiere from Corpus Christi, Texas, serves up a very pleasant surprise for one guest who brings in an oil painting by Diego Rivera. Painted in 1904 when he was just 18 years old, the piece is now valued at $1 million. The team also checks out a 1967 painting by Alexander Calder, a Japanese bronze depicting a mythical figure and a large Fisk Tire Boy sign.

The Biggest Loser, 7 p.m. on NBC: In this new episode, the contestants are introduced to the new outdoor gyms that the trainers have designed for them and find themselves pushed to new limits. Dr. H tells the adults some harsh truths about how unhealthy their excess weight is making them.

Love & Hip Hop, 7 p.m. on VH1: The reality series returns to New York for Season 3 with a few familiar faces and a whole lot of new ones. The show follows the drama in the personal and professional lives of aspiring hip-hop artists, producers, rappers and models in the urban jungle.

2013 Discover BCS National Championship, 7:30 p.m. on ESPN: Two legendary programs collide at Miami's Sun Life Stadium as No. 1 Notre Dame takes on second-ranked Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. Alabama is playing for a repeat title and the SEC's seventh straight, while Notre Dame is playing for its first championship since 1988. If you think you can escape the hype by watching instead a solid American classic on TCM, forget it. The old movie channel has an old (1965) Federico Fellini film on.

Deception, 9 p.m. on NBC: Meagan Good stars in this new drama series as Detective Joanna Locasto, who is tasked with solving the mysterious death of wealthy party girl Vivian Bowers. Joanna quickly proceeds to uncover dark secrets and clues about why Vivian's life was very much in danger, and she begins to see just how the other half lives ... and dies.
