The nation's Heisman Trophy voters are arguing over whether Alabama's AJ McCarron is a legitimate candidate.

It's not a career award, they say. His stats are great because he has a great team around him, they say. The award doesn't necessarily go to the best player on the best team, they say.

McCarron himself has made it clear he doesn't care if you vote him for the Heisman or dog catcher.

But for any voter who does care and is inclined to consider McCarron, here's something to think about as you watch today's Iron Bowl:

McCarron hasn't had quite as good a year individually as last season, but his best games have come in Alabama's most critical showdowns.

Last year, he led the nation in passing efficiency in 2012, but when the Crimson Tide faced Texas A&M, Auburn and Georgia, his numbers didn't shine. That kept most voters from seriously considering him.

This year, his best game came on the road at Texas A&M when he completed 20 of 29 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and Alabama needed every one of those completions, yards and scores.

He also burned LSU by completing 14 of 20 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Today, he has a chance to put up another good game against another good opponent, fourth-ranked Auburn.

If Alabama wins, he'll have another chance to show out against a good team in the SEC Championship Game (Missouri or South Carolina).

A Heisman winner should be his best when the stakes are highest, and McCarron has a chance to show he fits the definition.
