Anniston police today were investigating an assault in which a man reported being hit repeatedly with a bicycle tire pump Thursday evening.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the 54-year-old victim and a male witness were at the witness’ house on the 2800 block of Noble Street around 6 p.m. when the suspect arrived and started an argument.

The captain said that when the witness asked the suspect to leave, the suspect picked up the pump and struck the victim in the back of the head with it. The victim fell to the ground and the suspect continued to hit him with the pump. During the attack, the witness picked up an axe and began walking toward the suspect, George said.

The witness told police the suspect dropped the pump and ran out of the house after he saw the axe.

George said that when officers arrived, the victim told police he could not recall much of the incident. According to a police report, the victim suffered from a small cut on the back of his head but told police he did not require medical assistance.

Both the witness and the victim were able to identify the suspect, telling police his name and physical description.

The suspect could face charges of assault in the second-degree, a felony, according to a police report.
