An Anniston man was recovering today from a gunshot wound after he accidentally shot himself in the leg Sunday afternoon.

Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said the 21-year-old man was in a car on the 3000 block of Gurnee Avenue Sunday at 1:30 p.m. looking at a handgun.

While the man was sitting in the car, the gun accidentally went off and shot him in the calf, Sparks said.

The victim was taken to Regional Medical Center with injuries he is expected to recover from, the sergeant said. Police collected one bullet fragment from the vehicle, according to a police report.

The incident was ruled an accidental injury, the report shows.
