Police charged a man Wednesday with stealing a car from the Anniston Salvation Army parking lot last month.

Kenneth Wayne Arnett, 66, of Heflin, was charged with first-degree theft, a felony, according to a police report.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the 1995 Ford Aerostar van was reportedly stolen April 29 from the Salvation Army parking lot on the 400 block of Noble Street.

George said he believed the vehicle belonged to a person who lived near the Salvation Army.

On Wednesday, a Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw Arnett driving the vehicle at the Shell Travel Center off exit 205 of Interstate 20 in Heflin, George said. The deputy was familiar with Arnett, George said, and knew he did not own a vehicle. After further questioning, Arnett allegedly admitted to stealing the van, the captain said.

The deputy arrested Arnett at the scene and impounded the vehicle, George said.

Arnett was in the Anniston City Jail this morning, according to the captain.

Bond is set at $7,500. A court appearance is scheduled for June 10.
