JACKSONVILLE — The Planning Commission gave a local industry approval to move forward with plans to improve its facility.

Shelco Foundries, located on Francis Street, asked for permission to do grading on the grounds of its property. The commission voted unanimously to support the request during a called meeting Thursday.

“They have furnished everything we needed,” said Lynn Causey, city planner.

Causey said the development review approved Thursday is routine for the board, adding that the board conducts development reviews anytime a project comes before the commission. Such reviews can include site planning, utility planning and grading planning.

She said the planning commission is responsible for approving exterior changes in Jacksonville, while the city’s building inspector and its fire chief are responsible for approving internal changes, she said.

In other business the commission:

— Tabled a request to add a roof to a batting cage at Germania Springs Park. Members said they were concerned that the batting cage structure might not support the weight of the roof and could be dangerous.

— Heard from a representative of the East Alabama Regional Development and Planning Commission. Ryan Kallem discussed traffic flow and street maintenance with the commission members. His visit was part of an ongoing procedure to help the city update a its Comprehensive Plan, which includes a traffic review and involves an in-depth look into issues such as land use, zoning and economic development.
