The Fred Mitchell Award organization has honored Jacksonville State place-kicker Griffin Thomas for his excellence on the football field during September.

Thomas led JSU in scoring in September with 52 points, hitting 12 of 16 field goals and 16 of 16 extra points.

Thomas leads the FCS and the Ohio Valley Conference in field goals, and he also set the school record for points scored with 16 in a 24-21 double overtime win against North Alabama on Sept. 14. He also kicked a school-record five field goals.

The senior also handles the kickoff duties for Jacksonville State, where he averaged 62 yards on 31 kickoffs, with 14 touchbacks.

The Fred Mitchell Award is given to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker in FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA. The organization also honors a top kicker each month.
