If you're as eager as I am to see 12 Years a Slave -- which comes to Calhoun County theaters this week -- then treat yourself to this piece from The New York Times' Opinionator blog.

"The Passion of Solomon Northup" is a fine look at the original story as written in the 19th century. The author of the blog writes, "Few viewers will be familiar with Northup’s book, which describes his life as a free black man in New York, who was drugged, kidnapped and sold into slavery, before escaping 12 years later. Yet Northup’s narrative was, at the time, widely read: it sold three times as many copies as Frederick Douglass’s slave narrative in its first two years."

Writer Eric Herschthal goes into great detail to talk about the cinematography of the movie's hype -- in other words, is the film true to the book or does it take a different path? Can't wait to find out this weekend.
