I wouldn't, without proof. For what it's worth, signs of Christianity are prominent here in Calhoun County, be it Protestant churches, Catholic churches, Christian bookstores and Christian-themed imagery. This is the Bible Belt, after all.
Yet, a new study reported by the Religion News Service and conducted by the American Bible Society shows that only 1 in 5 Americans read the Bible on a regular basis.
Other tidbits from the survey:
- 1 in 6 respondents said they bought a Bible last year.
- Eighty-eight percent of those polled said they thought America's moral values were careening downhill.
- More than half of those aged 18-28 report reading the Bible less than three times a year or never.
Clearly, there's a large divide between the number of "churched" Americans and the number of Americans who say they read the Bible regularly. What that says about America's future or the status of its faith communities is worthy of debate.
