However, journalists are human and, as such, they are prone to making mistakes. Despite the safeguards media organizations put into place to weed out errors of fact, they do occur, even to the best journalists. When that happens, do they deserve to be fired?
That is what happened recently to veteran Associated Press reporter Bob Lewis and two AP editors after a serious mistake in a story about Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, was transmitted to AP subscribers. The mistake was caught, a correction was transmitted and Lewis admitted he the mistake. But he and the others were fired, nonetheless.
