Jacksonville's Lady Eagles won their regional tournament and Pleasant Valley's Lady Raiders came in second to advance both teams to sub-state action on Thursday.

Jacksonville (42-7), ranked No.2 in Class 5A state rankings, swept all three matches it played on Saturday to win the Class 4A Region C championship. The Lady Eagles beat West Point, Saks and Cherokee County all in three games.

Jacksonville senior Taylor Palmer was named MVP of the tournament. Palmer had an impressive 47 kills, 19 blocks and 11 aces.

Also named to the all-tournament team from Jacksonville was senior Caroline Neisler (27 kills, five blocks, five digs and seven assists) and setter Meagan Cabrer who had 92 assists, nine kills, six aces and two blocks.

The Lady Eagles will host fourth place finisher from Region D, Fairview, on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Earlier in the week Jacksonville hosted and won the Area 12 tournament for the right to go on to the regional tournament. The Lady Eagles took care of Hokes Bluff in three games 25-10, 25-8, 25-8 and in the championship game also swept Cherokee County 25-22, 25-16, 25-13.

Palmer once again led the charge with 25 kills, seven blocks and two aces. Neisler added 20 kills and three aces, Allender Doggett had 10 kills and four aces and Meagan Cabrer had 41 assists, six kills and six aces.

Pleasant Valley came in second place in Class 3A, Region C tournament at Saks to host sub-state action on Thursday against Holly Pond.

The Lady Raiders seemed on the verge on winning the tournament as they led in the championship game against Good Hope 2-1 with an 18-14 edge in the fourth game. A missed serve and a passing error led to other miscues and Pleasant Valley found itself losing the game 22-25. The Lady Raiders lost all momentum and fell in the fifth game and the championship 15-2.

Earlier in the tournament the Lady Raiders (32-25) had beat Altamont in three games, 25-11, 25-18, 25-11 and Danville 25-23, 14-25, 25-13, 20-25, 15-12.

Pleasant Valley head coach Dana Bryant, while pleased that her team will be playing in sub-state, was disappointed that it did not win the regional tournament.

"At this point we should be playing consistent and solid," said Bryant, "not playing consistent in the regional tournament cost us the championship."

Whitney Glass had 29 kills, 129 digs, two aces and eight blocks for the Lady Raiders, Jessie Kate Stewart added 25 kills, 79 digs, eight aces and 17 blocks; Payton Lewis 20 kills, 14 blocks; Jessica Boozer 11 kills and 10 blocks and setter Ashley Bryant had 96 assists, eight kills, 36 digs, four aces and five blocks. Glass, Stewart, Bryant and Lewis were named to the all-tournament team.

Pleasant Valley won the Class 3A Area 10 tournament, beating Piedmont 25-10, 25-18, 25-9 in the championship game. The Lady Raiders also beat Weaver in three games, 25-6, 25-9, and 25-13.

Glass was named tournament MVP with 21 kills, 44 digs and four aces. Named to the all-tournament team were Lewis, 14 kills and six blocks; Stewart, 23 kills, 31 digs, five blocks and three aces and Bryant with 17 digs and 85 assists.

Boozer also contributed 20 kills and three blocks; Jordan Luttrell seven kills, eight digs and five aces; Morgan Smith 28 digs; Jessica Glass 23 digs and three aces and Amber Pruitt eight digs.

Jacksonville Christian Academy's season came to a close as it was eliminated from the Class 1A area tournament at Donoho by Sacred Heart in five games in the first game of the tournament.

The Lady Thunder had beaten Sacred Heart three times in the regular season but were upset in the tournament.

JCA head coach Scott Morgan said, "I don't want to take anything away from Sacred Heart; they played really well. They've been improving all year and they have several very good athletes."

Morgan was proud of the way his team turned their season around. "Our season started out poorly," said Morgan. "We were 1-5 and then 2-7 but turned it around and got back to .500. We finished the season 9-12. We felt like after a poor start we got back into it. We just didn't finish like we had hoped."

JCA loses three seniors: Lindsay Huggins, Bethany Bridges and Holly James.
