Jacksonville's City Council started off its meeting with a moment of silence in honor of Representative Lea Fite, who died early Monday morning.
Mayor Johnny Smith said that Fite worked hard for Jacksonville and the surrounding areas as well.
The council then received a report on the responses to the city's call for engineering services for the Chief Ladiga Trail Resurfacing project. Members of the council chose the firm of James, Blair, Waldrup, and Tucker to perform the base repair and resurfacing. Council member George Areno abstained from the vote.
The council also approved adding $3,000 for the Jacksonville High School Softball Field project. The extra money will allow Walker Construction to work on the sewer line. The extra cost will not put the project over budget. According to the mayor, it is still under the original estimated cost of the project.
The council approved the reroofing of the existing Public Library due to storm damage. The project will be done by Kyner Roofing Company for an estimated cost of $8,775.
"We had damage to the roof of the library, but we are getting insurance coverage for that to get the project done," said the mayor. "The roof should match the roof of the new construction, so that will work out good."
During his report, Smith said he hopes everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. He reminded kids to wear reflective material and to use flashlights for better viability.
Jacksonville Police Chief Thomas Thompson recommended parents to have their kids trick or treat from 5 to 8 p.m.
"After that time the older kids get out and get into more mischief, and they are more subject to get hurt," said Thompson. "We are going to crack down on a lot of it after 8 o'clock.
In other action the council:
• Approved a resolution allowing the Mayor to sing a contract with Gym Service and Installation Company, Inc. to resurface the gymnasium floor at the Jacksonville Community Center, at a total cost of $4,920. This will include shuffleboard markings that will be used for next year's district Master Games Senior Competition
• Accepted the Utility Engineering Reports and Policy Regarding Pressure and Bacteriological Tests as adopted by the Water Works/Gas and Sewer Board Meeting
• Approved a one step increase for Holley Murray due to her additional duties in the Human Resources Department. Councilman Derek Raulerson said he hopes that Murray's additional work will save the city from hiring an additional person, saving taxpayers money.
