About 2,000 Cable One customers in Calhoun County went without Internet and phone service this morning after a glitch occurred during a router upgrade.

Trish Neiman, public relations manager for Cable One, said the problem occurred at the company’s headquarters in Phoenix. The company was performing a routine router upgrade Tuesday morning that temporarily caused an Internet outage for users across the country. When the upgrade was complete, Internet service was restored to all of Cable One’s coverage areas across the country – except parts of Calhoun County.

“We are now investigating why this situation occurred, so that we can avoid this issue in the future,” Neiman said in an email. “We apologize for the frustration and inconvenience this may have caused our customers.”

The Internet was back up and running around noon on Tuesday.

At least a few businesses in Anniston felt the effects of the outage. Katy Cairo, the digital media director for Anniston-based WideNet Consulting, a Web development company, said she and another employee had to use their iPhones to create a wireless hotspot for the office.

“We just pulled through Verizon,” Cairo said. “We were able to get all the work done that we needed to this morning.”

Cairo said that during the outage, WideNet received several calls from customers who wanted to know if the company could fix their own Internet troubles as well.

Haley Gregg, the program development coordinator at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber was without Internet service for more than four hours on Tuesday.

“We just kind of stalled,” Gregg said. “It was nothing major, but it’s just kind of a pain in the butt because you can’t get anything done.”
