“OF (outfielder) Reed Johnson will be placed on the DL (disabled list) with left Achillies tendinitis,” said the tweet, posted at just before midnight Central. “The contract of OF Todd Cunningham will be purchased from Gwinnett.”
Cunningham, 24, was drafted by the Braves in the second round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Junior Amateur draft. He moved up to Triple-A, one step below the major leagues, this season and was batting .283 with two home runs and 30 RBIs through 98 games.
He’s batting .281 with 10 homers and 125 RBIs through three-plus minor-league seasons.
MLB.com ranked Cunningham No. 9 among Braves prospects entering the 2013 season. He was named the Braves' 2012 Organizational Player of the Year after ranking third in the Southern League in batting and runs scored and fourth in hits with the Double-A Mississippi Braves.
The Braves will play host to the Colorado Rockies today at 6:10 p.m. The game will air regionally on the MLB Network.
