Less than a month after his transfer to Auburn, Jerome Seagears is leaving the Tigers’ men’s basketball program, the school announced today.

Seagears transferred to Auburn in May from Rutgers in the wake of a scandal over former Scarlet Knights coach Mike Rice’s alleged verbal abuse of players.

Auburn’s statement announcing Seagears’ departure said the junior guard was leaving to be closer to his family in Silver Spring, Md.

“Jerome came to me and expressed that he hadn’t truly recovered emotionally from his time at Rutgers,” Auburn head coach Tony Barbee was quoted as saying in the statement. “It is important to him that he continues his academic and athletic career closer to home where he can be near his immediate family and get the support system that he needs.”

Seagears played two seasons at Rutgers. Auburn had been petitioning the NCAA to allow him to play for the Tigers immediately rather than sit out the year normally required when transferring between schools in the same division.
