Wells Fargo will shut the doors to its six-story Anniston location for good Friday before demolishing it and replacing it with a new bank.

The gleaming white landmark at 1000 Quintard will close at noon Friday, while the building’s drive-through will remain open until 4 p.m. Beginning Monday, Wells Fargo will continue serving its Anniston-area customers out of a temporary building at the same address.

“We’re committed to making this move seamless for our customers,” said Drew Holderbein, Wells Fargo district manager, in an email to The Star.

Opened in April 1973 for First National Bank of Anniston, the building was a Wachovia bank before Wells Fargo bought the company and took control of the Anniston facility in 2009. Wells Fargo has said closing the building is necessary because it had several problems due to its age.

Wells Fargo will raze the building over a six-month period following the closing and construct a more efficient facility in its place. The new one-story structure is scheduled to open in the spring next year and will feature a more welcoming lobby and eight banker desks instead of five. It will be more energy-efficient and will be brick, its design to be consistent with other architecture in the city.

To assist the local community, Wells Fargo will donate 150 pieces of furniture and kitchenware from the building to Anniston Soup Bowl.
