In The Star

Sept. 16, 1938, in The Star: Although it doesn’t give a price for the device, Cater Furniture Co. in Anniston is advertising the new 1939 Philco radio, specially equipped with a “Mystery Control” that enables the user to change stations, control volume and even turn the device off without any wires or visible connection of any kind. [Yes, it was a radio equipped with what we’d call a remote.] Also this date: In Chicago, 500 physicians — representatives of the American Medical Association — convene today in extraordinary session to decide how to meet a demand for lower cost medical care. The organization has previously come out in opposition to “cooperative medicine,” which last month earned it and its officers grand jury scrutiny from the U. S. Justice Department on grounds of possible anti-trust violations. The United Press report states that some influential physicians feel that some form of group medical care plan was almost certain to be approved. How far it would go they were unwilling to forecast.

Sept. 16, 1988, in The Star: Anniston Superintendent of Education Dr. Bruce Wright sees a number of capital needs for his system. For one, its administrative offices need to be relocated out of the structurally deficient old homes they’re now in. For another, Golden Springs Elementary School keeps adding portable classrooms, but it really needs something more permanent thanks to booming growth in that area.
