Thanks to the Jacksonville Tree Ordinance Committee, under the city’s Alabama Communities of Excellence program, for inviting opinions of locals on the proposed tree ordinance by survey. As the News reported on April 2, 2008, many of the respondents like keeping large trees, minimum restrictions on development planting, licensing of tree cutters and setting up a tree bank. The arborarium from Ladiga Trail to City Park with an added pond, and a “pocket park” on the site of the old rec center are proposals worth pursuing by the committee, citizens and leaders.
The trail to the City Park would provide recreation and enhance the area west of Pelham Road. A pocket park, possibly incorporating a few more parking spaces, could provide beauty, recreation and promote shopping on the Square by reducing vehicle congestion; it may also encourage some Square businesses to open and spruce up rear entrances for customer attraction and convenience.
I wish I had thought up the pocket park.
