Egypt, France propose plan to end Gaza conflict

UNITED NATIONS — A cease-fire initiative Tuesday to halt the increasingly bloody Israeli offensive in Hamas-ruled Gaza won a quick endorsement from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who came to the United Nations seeking a truce.
