OXFORD — Bands of thunderclouds packing high winds rolled across Calhoun County Tuesday afternoon, snapping trees, flooding busy roads and snarling traffic along dark, powerless stretches.

A family affair on track

Model City Models is in an old warehouse, with sealed concrete for a floor and corrugated metal for walls. Susan Shipman's father started the business in 1996 because he couldn't find the supplies he needed, she said. He became an expert at building things from scratch, including gluing matchsticks together. She still has a love for model railroading, but it hasn't been quite enough yet. She's been building up a collection of interesting terrain, cars and engines that will eventually go into her design.
